Creamy Homemade Tahini Recipe

Creamy Homemade Tahini with Bakers Street Hulled Sesame Seeds

Bakers Street Hulled Sesame Seeds are premium-quality, lightly processed sesame seeds with the outer shell removed, delivering a smooth texture and rich nutty flavour ideal for making tahini and other sesame-based dishes.

In this recipe, you’ll learn how to transform these sesame seeds into creamy, spreadable tahini in under 15 minutes. This homemade version is fresher, more flavourful, and free of additives compared to many store-bought options.

Why Use Hulled Sesame Seeds (Key Benefits)

  • Smoother texture — Removing the hull helps produce a finer, creamier paste

  • Milder, less bitter flavour — Ideal for sauces, dips, dressings

  • Better absorption — Easier to blend and incorporate into recipes

  • Versatile usage — Can be used in tahini, dressings, cookies, sauces, etc.

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity Notes
Bakers Street Hulled Sesame Seeds 2 cups (approx. 300 g) Raw, not toasted
Neutral-flavoured oil 3–4 tbsp E.g. grapeseed, mild olive, vegetable oil
Pinch of fine sea salt Optional To taste

Equipment Needed

  • Dry skillet or oven tray (for toasting)

  • Food processor or high-powered blender

  • Spatula for scraping

  • Glass jar or airtight container (for storage)

Method / Steps

  1. Toast the sesame seeds

    • Place the seeds in a dry skillet over medium-low heat. Stir constantly, watching closely, until they emit a nutty aroma and turn a light golden shade (about 3–5 minutes).

    • Alternatively, you can spread them on a baking sheet and toast in a preheated oven (180 °C / 350 °F) for ~8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

    • Tip: Sesame seeds burn easily, so don’t leave them unattended.

  2. Cool the seeds

    • Transfer the toasted seeds to a plate or bowl and allow them to cool for several minutes so they don’t damage your blender or processor.

  3. Blend into tahini

    • Transfer the cooled seeds to a food processor or high-power blender.

    • Process continuously — the mixture will first turn into coarse crumbs, then into a thick paste.

    • With the motor running, drizzle in 3 tbsp oil gradually. Continue blending, scraping down sides, until you reach a smooth, pourable consistency.

    • If still too thick, add additional oil ½ tbsp at a time until desired texture is reached.

    • Optionally, add a pinch of salt and blend again briefly.

  4. Adjust consistency & flavour

    • If your tahini is too thick, add a little more oil. If too thin, process longer (or reduce oil).

    • Taste and adjust salt, if used.

  5. Store properly

    • Transfer tahini into a clean, airtight glass jar.

    • Store in the refrigerator. It will keep for up to 1 month.

    • Note: Separation may occur (oil rises); simply stir before use.

Usage Ideas & Serving Suggestions

  • Use as a base for hummus, baba ganoush, or other dips

  • Create a lemon-tahini dressing for salads or roasted vegetables (mix tahini + lemon juice + garlic + water)

  • Drizzle over grain bowls, roasted veggies, or grilled meats

  • Incorporate into baked goods or cookies for added nutty depth

  • Mix with herbs, garlic, and yogurt to make a cold sauce or dip
